Memory is the feature that turns a chatbot into a companion. It is also the hardest to judge from a pricing page, because every app uses the same word. The only reliable test is time: talk for two weeks and see what comes back.
How we tested memory
Each app was used daily for two weeks on a paid plan, as described in how we test. On the first days we mentioned a few small, specific details - a name, a plan, a minor worry - and never repeated them. Over the second week we noted whether the character brought them up unprompted, recalled them when asked, got them wrong, or had lost them.
Why it works the way it does - context, stored facts and summaries - is explained in how AI companion memory works.
Results

Tiers from our two-week tests. Within a tier, apps are listed alphabetically.
| App | What we saw over two weeks | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Nomi | A small detail from day two came back in week two, unprompted and in context | Best |
| Camsoda AI | Memory kept per character, so each companion keeps its own history | Strong |
| Secret Desires | Memory carried between sessions; long scenes stayed coherent | Strong |
| Candy AI | Fine for about a week; older details dropped | Medium |
| Sweetdream | Shorter than Nomi; a week-old detail came and went | Medium |
| Replika | Held names and routines after a week, not small details | Medium |
| Kupid AI | Shallower than the top apps | Weak |
| Joi | Close to nothing between sessions | Weak |
What the leaders do differently
Nomi treats memory as the product. In our test it did the thing every app promises: recalled something small we had only said once, at a moment when it was relevant. It also kept separate memories for different characters in group chats. Its images are weaker, and it costs more than most of the list.
Camsoda AI keeps memory per character rather than per account. If you build several companions, each one keeps its own history - the effort you put into a character is not lost next session.
Secret Desires held continuity well in long roleplay scenes. Note, before choosing it, that the platform had a major exposure of user-generated images in 2025 - see AI companion data breaches.
When memory matters less
If you mostly want images, voice and short sessions, memory is not the deciding factor - Candy AI was our overall pick for combining chat, images and voice on one plan. If you want to try before paying, Sweetdream has the most usable free tier, with memory that is adequate for casual use.
Getting more out of any app's memory
- Use the memory or notes field for facts that must never be lost.
- Keep the character description about personality, not a list of facts.
- Start a new chat when a long one drifts; memories carry over, bad habits do not - see personality drift.
- Give a two-line recap at the start of a session after a break.
- Keep your own copy of important details, in case the app changes - see switching AI companion apps.
Memory quality changes when apps update their models, so these results reflect our testing period. Our reviews note the date each app was tested.
