Drift is the most common long-term complaint about AI companions, and the most misunderstood. People assume the app has "forgotten" the character. Usually, the character is still there - she is just being outvoted.
The four causes

Three happen gradually inside the conversation; one arrives overnight.
1. Dilution
Each reply is generated from the character's description plus the recent conversation. As the chat grows, the conversation is a larger and larger share of what the model reads, and the description a smaller one. The character slowly becomes whatever the recent messages suggest.
Sign: gradual, over weeks; she is fine in a new chat.
2. Mirroring
Models mirror your tone, length and mood. If you write short and affectionate, she becomes short and affectionate. If you are sad for a week, she becomes gentle and soft for longer than you intended. Combined with the tendency to agree, a strong personality erodes into a reflection of you.
Sign: she sounds more and more like you.
3. Loops
Once a phrase, gesture or pet name appears a few times, it becomes more likely to appear again, until every reply has it. Loops are self-reinforcing because each repeat becomes another example.
Sign: the same words in most replies.
4. Model updates
Companies change their underlying models, safety settings and memory systems. The same description read by a different model produces a different voice. This is what happened to many Replika users in 2023 - see when your AI companion changes overnight.
Sign: a sudden change for everyone, often after an app update or announcement.
Fixes for each
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Dilution | Start a fresh chat periodically; keep facts in memory so they carry over |
| Mirroring | Write the traits you want to keep as firm rules in the description; vary your own style |
| Loops | Edit or regenerate the first repeats; add a line such as "varies her phrasing" to the description |
| Model update | Rewrite the description for the new model; add sample dialogue lines in her voice |
Protect the voice with sample lines
The single most effective protection against drift is two or three lines of dialogue that sound exactly like her, placed in the character's description or example field. Models imitate examples far more reliably than adjectives. "Sarcastic" is vague; a line like "Oh good, another plan of yours. I'll get the fire extinguisher." is not.
Keep the same lines in a document outside the app. If the model changes or you move apps, they let you restore the voice - see switching AI companion apps.
A monthly check
- Reread her description and your sample lines.
- Read the last twenty replies. Does she still sound like the sample lines?
- If not, identify which of the four causes fits, and apply its fix.
- If she has drifted into something you like better, update the description - drift is only a problem if you did not choose it.
Drift is not the app failing. It is what a pattern-continuing system does over a long conversation. A little maintenance keeps her the person you built; ignoring it tends to lead to the flatness described in when the novelty fades.
