The shape of it is always the same. The first week is genuinely surprising. By week six the same four topics come round and the replies have a rhythm you can predict. Three things cause this, and they need different responses.
Cause 1: the history got compressed
This is the mechanical one and it is not your fault. As a conversation grows past what the model can hold, apps replace old messages with summaries, then summarise the summaries. Each pass drops specifics and keeps generalities, so the character is increasingly built from a bland description of itself.

- Re-introduce specifics. Mention concrete details again — names, an incident, a running joke. It puts them back in the window.
- Edit the memory directly if the app exposes it. Delete the entries that have become noise, sharpen the ones that matter.
- Start a new thread, keep the character. In apps that separate the two, a fresh conversation with an intact persona often restores more than anything else.
Cause 2: you settled into a routine
The less obvious one. After a month most people converge on the same three or four openings, and a model that responds to what you give it returns a correspondingly narrow range. The loop is partly yours.
What breaks it is changing the input rather than the app:
- Give it a situation instead of a greeting. "We are stuck at a train station at 2am" produces something different from "hey, how are you".
- Ask it to disagree with you about something trivial and hold the position.
- Change the format — a letter, a memory recounted years later, a scene from someone else's perspective.
- Use a feature you have been ignoring. If you have only ever typed, a voice conversation is a genuinely different product.

Cause 3: it is the wrong app for you
If the first two changed nothing, this is the answer.
A roleplay-first app will feel thin if what you wanted was continuity. A continuity-first app will feel slow if what you wanted was scenes. Both disappointments read identically from the inside — "it got boring" — and neither is fixed by prompting harder.

When fading is just the answer
Sometimes the novelty wearing off is accurate information: you tried the category, it was interesting for a month, and it is not for you. That is a perfectly good outcome and considerably cheaper than a year's subscription fighting it.
Before renewing, count the days you actually opened it. If the honest number is under half the month, cancel and delete properly rather than leaving it to drift.
