Someone on a forum says an app costs $9. Your checkout says €14.99. Neither of you is lying, and four separate things account for the gap.
1. Deliberate regional pricing
Most operators set different prices in different markets, based on what the market bears rather than on any cost difference. The product is identical; the number is a commercial decision.
This is completely standard across software and it is why a price quoted in a review is only meaningful alongside the country it was quoted in. Our French, Dutch and Japanese editions carry the prices that actually apply there, in the local currency, for exactly this reason.
2. Tax added at checkout
US listings are conventionally quoted before sales tax. EU listings are generally quoted including VAT, which runs roughly 17–27% depending on the country.
So a $12.99 headline and a €14.99 checkout can be the same underlying price with Dutch or French VAT applied. Comparing a tax-exclusive number with a tax-inclusive one makes an app look 20% more expensive than it is, and this accounts for most of the confusion in forum threads.
The rule of thumb: if you are in the EU or UK, the price you see is usually what you pay. If you are in the US, expect tax on top.
3. Your bank's conversion fee
If the app bills in dollars and your card is in euros or yen, your bank converts — and typically takes 1.5–3% for doing it, sometimes plus a flat foreign transaction fee.
This is invisible on the app's side entirely. It shows up only on your statement, and it is worth checking once: a card with no foreign transaction fee saves a few percent on every renewal of every subscription you hold, not just this one.
4. App store commission
Apple and Google take a cut of in-app purchases. Companies price around it, so the same tier frequently costs more inside the app than on the company's website.
Where both routes exist, buying on the website is usually cheaper. The trade-offs — who handles cancellation, who issues refunds, what appears on your statement — are in browser or app store and refunds and chargebacks.
Why a VPN is not the answer
The obvious idea is to appear to be somewhere cheaper. In practice it fails, and it fails expensively.
The payment breaks it. Price region is usually determined by the card's issuing country or the billing address, not by your IP. A VPN changes the page and not the checkout.
It violates the terms. Every major app store and nearly every operator prohibits it explicitly.
An account flagged for it can be closed — with whatever credits, history and character are inside it. In a category where the value is accumulated history, that is a bad trade for a few dollars a month.
Refunds get harder. A dispute over a subscription obtained by misrepresenting your location is one you will lose.

What to actually do
Compare the checkout, not the landing page. The only number that means anything is the one on the payment screen in your own country with your own card.
Check whether the renewal price differs from the first period, which is a larger effect than regional pricing in most cases — see what these apps cost.
Use a card without foreign transaction fees if the app bills in a currency that is not yours.
Do not price-shop across borders. The saving is small, the downside is the account.
