Upgrade pages in this category are vague on purpose — "enhanced memory", "priority access", "premium models" — because specifics invite comparison. Underneath the wording there are only four things being sold.
1. More media (worth it, and easy to calculate)
The most honest upgrade because it is measurable. More images, more voice minutes, video access.
This is the one case where you can do arithmetic rather than guess: count what you actually use, price it against buying credits at the entry tier, and take whichever is lower. The method is in what image generation really costs you.
If the maths says the higher tier is cheaper, it is cheaper. There is nothing else to weigh.
2. Deeper memory (worth the most, hardest to verify)
Usually described as longer memory or better recall. When it is real, it is the single most valuable thing an upgrade can buy, because memory is what separates an app that is pleasant for a week from one that is pleasant in month four.
The problem is verification. "Enhanced memory" can mean a larger context window, more stored facts, better retrieval — or a marketing phrase attached to nothing in particular.
The test: on the entry tier, chat daily for a week, stop for four days, come back and ask about something specific from day two. Note what it gets wrong. Upgrade and repeat the same test. If the failures are identical, you bought a phrase.
This is exactly the kind of thing that takes a fortnight to establish and is why we test on paid accounts over time rather than from feature tables.
3. Faster replies (worth it only for voice)
Priority queuing during busy periods. For text, the difference between two seconds and five is real but rarely worth a tier on its own.
For voice conversation it is a different matter: latency is the whole experience, and a three-second gap before every answer destroys the illusion completely. If you are upgrading for real-time voice, this is not a minor bullet — it is the feature.
4. Better models (the disappointing one)
Presented as the flagship benefit and usually the least noticeable in practice.
A stronger model helps most with complex reasoning and long-form coherence. Companion conversation is neither. What you actually notice in this category is the character description, the retrieval and the sampling settings — the things covered in how replies are generated — and those are frequently identical across tiers.
Not worthless. Just consistently oversold relative to items one and two.
The rule that works
Do not upgrade until you can name the limit.
If you can say "I run out of images by Thursday" or "it forgets things from last week and that is the whole point for me", upgrading is a considered purchase against a known problem.
If the reason is "the premium tier is probably better", you are buying headroom you have no way to evaluate, and you will not be able to tell afterwards whether it helped.
Where the tiers sit
Among the apps we track, published entry prices run from Sweetdream at $10.00 through Candy AI at $12.99 and Nomi at $15.99 to Replika at $19.99.
Worth noting: a higher entry price frequently means fewer upgrade decisions later, because more is included from the start. Candy AI covering chat, images and voice inside one subscription is the clearest example, and it is a large part of why it leads our ranking despite not winning any individual category outright.
Comparing entry tiers across apps is therefore misleading. Compare the tier that contains the thing you came for.
The order that costs least
- Entry tier, monthly, for a month.
- Write down the specific limit that annoyed you, in words.
- If it is media, do the arithmetic. If it is memory, run the four-day test.
- Upgrade for that reason, still monthly.
- Consider annual only after a month you enjoyed at the tier you settled on — per monthly, annual or credits.
Most people who follow this end up on the entry tier of a slightly more expensive app rather than the premium tier of a cheap one, which is usually the better product for the same money.
