The two kinds of free
A capped product. You can use it indefinitely. Text chat works, memory works, and the limits sit on media and on how fast you can send messages. You could stay here for months and have a real sense of the app.
A trailer. A handful of messages or a few days, then a wall. It exists to show you the interface, not the product. Anything you conclude from it about memory or consistency is guesswork, because neither shows up in a day.
Telling them apart takes about ten minutes: use it, hit something, and read what the wall says. A message about a daily allowance means the first kind. A message about upgrading to continue means the second.
What gets metered, and why
The pattern is consistent across the category because the underlying costs are:
- Images cost the operator real money each time. Always capped, usually hard.
- Voice is metered by the minute or the message. Often the first thing to disappear.
- Video, where offered at all, is paid-only in practice.
- Message volume is capped by count or by rate, but generously compared to media.
- Memory depth is sometimes shorter on free plans, which makes a free tier a poor way to judge exactly the feature that matters most.
That last point is the trap. Judging an app's memory from its free tier can tell you it is worse than it is.
Which free tiers are worth the time
Among the apps we test, Sweetdream is the one whose free tier reads as a product rather than a demo — it is the reason it sits second in our ranking at a 4.5 despite a $10.00 paid plan that is the cheapest of the group.
Replika is the other one worth an unpaid fortnight, for a different reason: the free experience is the classic version of this category, and if it leaves you cold, the more expensive apps are unlikely to change your mind.

How to use a free tier properly
Spend the first session on conversation alone. Do not generate a single image — you will exhaust the cap and learn nothing about the writing.
Give it one real fact about yourself on day one and ask about it on day three. That single test tells you more than the entire features list.
Then, and only then, spend the media allowance in one sitting, so you see the quality at its best rather than one picture a day.
When free stops being the right question
