When an AI companion disappears or changes for you, it helps to know which of the four forces is responsible, because each has a different fix - or none.
The four forces

Each one leaves a recognisable pattern.
1. Regulators
Privacy and consumer regulators can order a service to stop processing data from their country. The best-known case in this category is Italy: in February 2023 the Italian data protection authority ordered Replika to stop processing Italian users' data over risks to children, and in 2025 fined its operator €5 million. Orders like this can make an app unavailable in one country while it works everywhere else.
Fingerprint: the whole service disappears in one country, often with a notice.
2. Age-verification laws
The UK's Online Safety Act has required effective age checks for services with pornographic content since July 2025, including AI tools that generate it. Many US states have similar laws for adult sites, upheld by the Supreme Court in 2025. Some operators respond by building checks; others simply switch off adult features, or the whole service, where the law applies. The methods are compared in age verification on AI companion apps.
Fingerprint: adult content missing, or an age check appearing, in specific countries or states.
3. App stores
Apple and Google restrict sexual content in apps worldwide, and also apply local rules country by country. A developer may leave an app out of certain national stores to avoid a regulator, or a store may remove it after a complaint. The web version of the same service is often unaffected - see browser or app store.
Fingerprint: the app is missing from your store, but the website works.
4. Payment processors
Card networks and payment companies set their own rules on adult content. In July 2025, after a campaign aimed at payment providers, Steam removed hundreds of adult games from sale and itch.io hid adult content, both citing their payment partners. Companion apps are exposed to the same pressure. Payment rules rarely differ by country, but the acceptable payment methods often do.
Fingerprint: a feature or plan disappears for everyone, or a particular payment method stops working.
Which one is it?
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| App gone from your store only | App store listing or local rules |
| Whole service unavailable in your country | Regulator order or operator's choice |
| Age check appeared suddenly | Local age-verification law |
| Adult content removed in your country only | Age-verification law or local store rules |
| Adult content removed everywhere | Payment processor or company policy |
| Price or plan different from abroad | Regional pricing and taxes - see pricing by country |
Your options
- Try the web version. It avoids app store restrictions and is often more complete.
- Check the company's help pages or social channels. Operators usually explain country restrictions, even briefly.
- Look for an alternative that operates legally where you are. It is the only option that keeps your consumer and privacy protections intact.
- Think twice about a VPN. It can restore access, but it can break the terms of service, make payments fail or cost more, and place you under another country's rules for refunds and privacy. In some countries it is itself restricted.
Before a restriction hits
Restrictions tend to arrive with little warning. The same precautions that protect you from an app shutting down apply here: keep a copy of your character and your favourite exchanges, and avoid long prepaid plans with apps whose status in your country looks uncertain. When your AI companion changes overnight has the checklist.
